Counselling for children
Some children know why they are distressed or
behave in ways which their parents or teachers find unacceptable. Others are
confused by feelings they do not understand or cannot explain. The rooms where
I work are well equipped with a range of resources such as paint, clay, sand,
puppets etc. which children can use to explore and express their thoughts and
feelings.
I can offer help for children who:
- act out their distress aggressively
- are withdrawn or anxious
- have been bullied or bully
others
- have been bereaved
- are distressed by family
breakdown
- suffer from sleep problems
Before I start counselling with a child client,
I meet with parents to hear about their views of the child's difficulties and to talk
about how they might explain about counselling to their child. At this time,
it is sometimes also appropriate to discuss whether short term or longer term
counselling is likely to be more helpful. If we agree that counselling should
go ahead, the cost of the parent interview is included in the cost of the sessions.
What takes place in the sessions is confidential, within the limits of my child protection policy. However, sometimes
children decide that there are things which we have done or talked about which
they would like to share with their parents. In this case, I arrange to see
the parent and child together. Where appropriate, I also offer parents the
chance to discuss the way forward after the conclusion of the counselling.
My work is regularly supervised by an experienced counselling supervisor,
in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework.
